It’s very inspiring to hear that these perverse incentives are not ubiquitous and that you have had a very different experience. I’ve certainly worked at companies that rewarded intelligence, but sadly more like the ones described above, especially ones of scale. Whilst I have many years experience working in and with corporations of all sizes in numerous sectors, I wouldn’t extrapolate from the particulars of my experience to the general without careful consideration. I don’t think any individual can say much about everyone’s experiences just based on their own. That’s why the points I made were pulled from the book I mentioned and the authors did considerable research across many, many corporations to validate their hypothesis. The piece seems to resonate with many people, but I’m glad your career has not evinced these points.
